Mumbai, Jan 21 (PTI) Bollywood star Irrfan Khan took home the best actor trophy for his realistic and effective portrayal of a middle-class father in “Hindi Medium”, while romantic-comedy “Bareilly ki Barfi” earned other top two honours, including the best director award for Ashwiny Iyer at the 63rd Filmfare Awards.

The second award for “Bareilly ki Barfi” came for Rajkummar Rao in the best supporting actor category. Held last evening here, the prestigious award ceremony gave away the best actor (female) award to Vidya Balan for her heartwarming performance of a housewife-turned-radio jockey in “Tumhari Sulu”.

It was not only Irrfan but even “Hindi Medium” won in highest category – taking home the best film award. The dramedy, which marked the debut of director Saket Choudhary, was hit with the masses and the critics, and became one of the first successes of Bollywood in 2017, which until then suffered a dry spell at the box office.

Much like the last year, the award ceremony also more or less belonged to Rajkummar. He won the best actor (critics) award for his hard-hitting performance in survival drama “Trapped”. The film also won in technical categories – best editing and best sound design.

His “Newton”, which was selected as India’s official entry for the upcoming Oscars in the best foreign film category, also received two honours – best film (critics) and best original story for its writer-director Amit V Masurkar.

Critics choice for best actor (female) went to teenage star Zaira Wasim for “Secret Superstar”. The film also earned an award in the best supporting actor (female) category for Meher Vij, who played Zaira’s mother.

Actor-filmmaker Konkona Sensharma bagged the best debut director for “A Death in the Gunj”. The suspense drama also won in the best costume and best cinematography categories.

“Jagga Jasoos” might have been a box office dud but the film won big for its music. Pritam took home the best music album award, while Amitabh Bhattacharya received the honour for best lyrics. Pritam also bagged the award for the film’s background score.

“Jagga Jasoos” also won in the category of best choreography for Vijay Ganguly and Ruel Dausan Varindani for the song “Galti se mistake”.

Critically-acclaimed drama “Mukti Bhawan” got Shubhashish Bhutiani the trophy for best screenplay.

‘Nude’ gets ‘A’ certificate without cuts

Mumbai, Jan 18 (PTI) Marathi film “Nude”, which was dropped from the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), has received A certificate from the CBFC, without any cuts.

The director of the film, Ravi Jadhav, took to Twitter to thank the special jury team of the Central Board of Film Certification, presided by actor Vidya Balan, for their support.

“Our film ‘Nude’ received an ‘A’ certificate without any cuts! The entire CBFC special jury team headed by Mrs Vidya Balan gave us a standing ovation! Thank you everyone for your kind support,” Jadhav wrote.

The film, which depicts the struggle of a woman secretly working as a nude model in Mumbai, was pulled out from the Indian Panorama section of the 48th edition of the film festival, which was held in Goa last year in November.

The exclusion of “Nude”, along with Malayalam film “S Durga” days before IIFI’s opening, had created an uproar after the I and B Ministry overruled the festival jury’s decision of screening the movies at the Panorama.

Later, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who is also the chairman of Entertainment Society of Goa, the nodal agency to host the IFFI, had said “Nude” was rejected as they did not have the clearance from the censor board.

Sanal Kumar Sasidharan’s “S Durga” was also not screened at the film festival even after getting a favourable verdict from the Kerala High Court as the CBFC asked the producers to resubmit the movie for certification.

Mumbai, Jan 14 (PTI) Bollywood film maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali today said that his much-awaited directorial venture “Padmaavat” is his tribute to the glorious stories of Rajput “honour, valour and vigour”.

The director said, the lavishly mounted period drama, which will hit the screens on January 25, is a dream come true for him.

“‘Padmaavat’ is a dream come true for me. I have always been fascinated by the stories of honour, valour and vigour of our great Rajput warriors that have been captured so beautifully in our literature and this movie is my homage to those glorious stories,” Bhansali said in a statement.

Featuring Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji, the film got stuck in controversy after various Rajput groups, including Rajput Karni Sena, raised their objections towards the content of the movie.

The film which was sent back to the makers, citing “technical issues” by the Central Board of Film Certification when it was submitted in November, received a U/A certificate last month along with five modifications.

During the country-wide protests against the film, many members from the industry came forward to support the filmmaker and the cast.

In his statement, Bhansali also thanked the fraternity for their unwavering support.

“I would also like to thank the entire film fraternity for supporting Viacom18 and Bhansali Productions through the entire production and pre-release phase and hope they like the film they so supported,” he said.

“Padmaavat” is based on 16th century Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi’s epic poem “Padmavat”.

We are not friends: Vikas Gupta on Shilpa Shinde

Lonavala, Jan 9 (PTI) “Bigg Boss” contestant Vikas Gupta’s equation with fellow contestant Shilpa Shinde may have improved over time but the producer says they are not friends.

Shilpa, who became a household name as Angoori Bhabhi of “Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai”, had alleged that Vikas was behind her ouster from the popular TV show.

Vikas said he had not met the actor after her controversial exit from “Bhabiji…” and was surprised to see her on the reality show.

“For the first five weeks or so we did not get along well and later realised that this was not going anywhere, so as mature people we kept that thing away. We could have continued with it (drama of fighting) for 13 weeks as she is a good actor and I am a good writer.

“But we thought of taking a break from all this and behave like normal colleagues. We are not friends. There are times when we still don’t get along well, but we try to handle it in a mature manner,” Vikas said in a media interaction here.

Another housemate who does not gel well with Shilpa is Hina Khan and she said the three of them equally deserve to win.

“Maybe when we reach the finale, we end up taking to each other. There is no malice between us. I don’t have anything against Shilpa. If she wins the show, I don’t have any problem… They (Shilpa and Vikas) both are deserving and so am I,” she said.

As the countdown to the finale of the season 11 of “Bigg Boss” has begun, Hina and Vikas have been critical of Shilpa for not participating in the tasks.

“This (‘Bigg Boss’) is a game show, you have to participate in the tasks. Cooking is important. She (Shilpa) is commendable. I am respectful of the fact that she cooks and we all get food to eat,” he said.

Mumbai, Jan 8 (PTI) After facing several roadblocks, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial film “Padmavati”, retitled “Padmavat”, seems set for a January 25 release, sources in Viacom18 Motion Pictures said on Monday.

The film, mired in controversy over its plot line, has been given the go-ahead by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has asked the makers to change the title and suggested some other modifications.

The film was earlier scheduled to be released on December 1.

Though Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have not released an official statement yet, sources in the production house confirmed that the film will release on January 25, a day before Republic Day.

“The film is releasing on January 25. There is no clarity when the official statement will be out regarding this,” sources in the Viacom18 Motion Pictures told PTI.

Trade anaylist Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to announce the release date.

“#Padmavat to release on 25 Jan 2018…

#RepublicDayWeekend,” he tweeted.

Akshay not bothered with possible clash of Padman, Padmavati

Someone said that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmavati” may be released on “Padman” day, but actor Akshay Kumar hopes both films will perform well during the holiday weekend.

“Padmavati” missed the release date of December 1 due to controversy over the plot and was eventually released by the review board. According to anecdotal evidence, the producer plans to release January 25 – “Padman” under R Balki’s command.

The Central Film Commission (CBFC) recently gave U / A certification and some changes and suggested changing its title to “Padmavat.”

Asked about the possible conflict between the two films, Aksha said: “It’s not competition, it’s a very big day, a big week, and all the movies are available. Both films are available on the day issued.

He told reporters: “Every movie has the right to publish at any time, I am happy for them.”

Viacom18 and Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions have not yet released the official release date for the movie.

Sonam Kapoor, Akshay’s Padman co-star, said she will wait for an official statement from the Padmavati team.

Sonam said: “This is not officially announced, is not it? If so, it is good, the film needs to be competitive, and the time it takes to be shown is the right one.

Good movie is a good movie, I do not believe in competition.

“To be honest, I’m happy to see the release of this movie better than anything else, and I hope it works well and I’m pretty sure I have an official statement issued by the filmmakers’ (Padmavati).”

Akshay and Sonam are promoting their movie at “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Ghe Panga Kar Danga” in Zee Marathi last night.

Sonam wants more female-oriented films to be made in India

Mumbai, Jan 4 (PTI) Actor Sonam Kapoor feels there is a need for more films that revolve around women.

Her forthcoming film “Veere Di Wedding”, also starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania, is themed around a wedding. Kareena will play the part of a bride-to-be in the movie.

“‘Veere Di Wedding’ looks so different. There should be more such films, this should be the norm,” Sonam told PTI.

“In Hollywood there are many female-oriented films that are such big blockbusters and are entertaining. We don’t have such films in India.”

The actor believes Hindi film industry is 20 years behind when it comes to making female-led commercial stories.

“Julia Roberts was huge in the ’80s and ’90s. Here it was about my dad (Anil Kapoor) and the other actors. The ’90s were about the Khans (Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman). With our generation, we are atleast getting the opportunity to do that, but we are 20 years behind,” she said.

Sonam, 32, said working alongside a top female actor like Kareena, who also happens to be her good friend, for the first time in a movie was exciting.

“It is easy to communicate especially when it is a chemistry-driven film with four women. Since we are friends, it was a fun experience working with her.”

Directed by Shashanka Ghosh, the film is set for release on May 18.

The “Neerja” actor also reunites with “Saawariya” co-star Ranbir Kapoor for Sanjay Dutt biopic.

Sonam said the actor has not changed much over the years.

“I don’t think I have changed either. He is such a fine actor. We just have 10 years of experience. But it was fabulous working with him. We shot in ND studios for ‘Saawariya’ and for this film we shot at the same place. So it was deja vu.”

Helmed by Rajkumar Hirani, the biopic on Dutt is scheduled for release in March.
